FLEB's Punctuationalist's Phrasebook (1st ed.)

Sat Oct 14, 2006, 7:18 AM
A punctuational language for interfacing with those who speak Punctuationally. This is an invaluable resource for interfacing with those who speak the cryptic "..." language, notable for its common use of the phrase "...", meaning "I have absolutely nothing to say". Though this may seem like nothing more than a simple, space-filling bleat, it is actually the tip of a very rich and varied language. By learning the language, you too can open the door to an amazing cultural landscape.

Symbols not shown here should be deciphered verbally or visually.

... - "I have absolutely nothing to say."

" " - Quotation marks, as per common grammar

. - Period. Phrase endings are more often indicated by whitespace than with a punctuational device, however.

, - Comma, as per common grammar.

! - Not. Derived from programming languages, when this symbol is placed before another, it negates it. (!+# - Needs no more work.)

!!! - Extreme enthusiasm. On its own, indicates something is very good. After another symbol, indicates strong emphasis.

+ - Moreso, more, very. When placed after another symbol, intensifies it (!!!+ - "very good"). When placed before another symbol, indicates a need for more (+# - "needs more hashing out")

+++ - Good (similar to !!! although less enthusiastic)

--- - Bad, Awful, Sucks.

? - Question, look into, perhaps

??? - WTF?

~ - Somewhat. Also indicates noncommittal "meh" feeling.

= - Is. Used to indicate an existing state as opposed to a suggestion. For instance: "=+( )" means "Is too large", whereas "+( )" means "make large(r)" (although the last phrase would more commonly be depicted as "<( )>".

^ - Top or Up

_ - Bottom or Down

> - Right or right side

< - Left or left side

=== - Vertically

| - Horizontally

|| - Parallel

|/ - Not parallel

|/| - Skew

|/\| - Perspective

|//| - Rotate(d)

-> or <- - Move

X - Delete

* - Footnote, P.S.

: - Colon. (for use in medical discussion)

# - "Hash out" or "pound on" something. More work.

( ) - Large

}{ - Small

<( )> - Make larger

>}{< Make smaller

] - bracket (photographic term)
